Blacktop Stripdown Pics

Heres my currently not so healthy blacktop engine, trial one that come out of my mk3 fiesta. After a cam belt snap, it chewed up the crank seal.

Pics should let you gauge an idea of whats different and how you may need to modify it. This is my ”revision one” version, as ”revision two” may slightly differ!

Best way of holding the flywheel to undo crank pulley bolts.

With the flywheel removed we can seestandard oil seal carrier, same as silvertop.

Looks pretty much the same as the silvertop from here, (yes rockercover is a silvertop item!)

Thermostat housing off.

Engine stand cradle attached

View from belts end. First thing to note is water pump set up, oil filter is on back of block, and my added in pulley.

Another view, note how tight it is for water pump housing and front engine mount. You would not fit PAS pump in here.

Another view again, here you can see that the mk3 zetec engine mount bolts up (well not quite, email me if you want to know more), just, see pic below.

Here you can see the extra holes ive had to drill. Only two of the 3 bolts mount to the block (ok this doesnt work to well, long story will explain soon)

Better view.

View of two piece sump assembly

Head with cams out, looks exactly same as silver top. Solid tappets though.

Head off, again allmost identical, bigger inlet valves though.

MLS head gasket

Fiesta breather fits nicely onto block

Dont know if anyone knows if this is standard (if you do please let me know) but my engine has dished pistons.

Block with no head

This is how tight it is when using a fiesta zetec non pas mount. Note that only 3 bolts actually  line up to the block. And alot has to be taken off the inside of the mount.

Smaller hole compared to silvertop where pump mounts into block.

Water pump and housing assembly

Oil pump and idler pulley

Part of crank seal chewed up

Same again

Breather removed

Sump assembly

Lower sump oil pan removed, no gasket, sealant is used.

Pickup pipe removed.

Upper sump removed

I spy a bit of my timing belt

And another bit.

Yum

Theres a moral to this story

Block with no oil pump

Chewed crank seal

Effects of a small bit of timing belt in your pump.

Moral of the story is, fit a a timing belt cover, then if your drive belt snapps, if wont go into you timing belt, if wont chew up, and wont work its way into the crank seal, and into the oil pump

Lesson learnt!
